Pentillie Castle and Estate has had a rich and varied past. It was built in 1698 by Sir James Tillie, before being remodelled and enlarged significantly in 1809 by John Coryton.

A more detailed history of Pentillie Castle.

In 1967, under the helm of Major Jeffrey Coryton, two thirds of the castle was demolished, returning the building to closer to its original 1698 footprint. The original granite pillars, and brick arches of the 1698 build are once again a major part of the façade.

The current owners, Ted and Sarah Coryton, (see picture below with their three children) undertook a massive restoration project in 2008-09 lovingly recapturing the castle’s former glory, while modernising it with the addition of en-suite bathrooms, extensive re-wiring and re-plumbing to ensure that the creature comforts we expect today are at arm’s reach. Opening in May 2009, Pentillie Castle has now opened it’s doors to all, whether local businesses requiring a corporate space, couples looking for a wedding venue, travellers looking for somewhere fabulous to unwind, or the local community coming to enjoy the gardens or outdoor theatre in the stunning surroundings. The family also support a number of local charities, in particular military charities, and host a group of recuperating military veterans and serving ranks for a week every year.

The estate stretches over approximately 1,500 acres of undulating land in the heart of the Tamar Valley on the Cornwall & Devon border. Extensive gardens, formal lawns, parkland and ancient woodland form the backdrop to a wonderful location for boutique B&B stays, intimate weddings, shooting parties and other memorable events, both personal and public. The work that’s gone in to this magnificent estate over the past few years means it’s once more a destination worthy of its grand reputation – and will be for years to come. The Coryton family run Pentillie Castle with a small but passionate team who take enormous pride in what they do.
